International Conference on Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining & Quarrying

At the ASM18 conference held in Livingstone, Zambia early this year, the World Bank organized an interactive session on “Why Data Matters for ASM Policy and Practice”. The session involved a panel of academic and practitioner experts discussing the data challenges of ASM and engaging in an open dialogue with conference participants. The panel also highlighted the need for better data collection and coordination across the sector, and how Delve can help address this gap. The response from conference participants was incredibly encouraging and provided great feedback for 2018 sector report, the importance of combining social and geological data collection, and the need to feedback to communities the results of data collection. The session also identified a range of key data needs for the sector with which to focus the Delve data platform, and 2018 report.  The ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya Declaration’ released by the conference also acknowledged the importance of data management in supporting the sector and urged stakeholders to collaborate on data collection and data sharing.
