We identify differences in formalization patterns across gold and diamond mining.
We conduct an extensive survey of 231 communities in Gbarpolu County (Liberia).
We spatially match mining sites to their nearest license in the country’s cadastre.
Artisanal diamond mines are more likely to fall under an “umbrella of formality”.
We question the effectiveness of formalization strategies.
