National Strategy for the Advancement of Artisanal and Small Scale Mining (ASM) in Uganda
This report was prepared by Jennifer Hinton under the Consultancy for Community Development and Small Scale Mining funded through the Sustainable Management of Mineral Resources Project (SMMRP) and is the property of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD). The report provides an assessment of ASMs contribution to econimc development and further attests to the need for a National ASM Strategy. The report outlines the National ASM Strategy. Founded on three primary goals and supported by 15 achievable, time-bound objectives, the National ASM Strategy seeks to operationalize commitments put forward in the Mineral Policy (2001) wherein the Department of Geological Survey and Mines (DGSM) under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) is mandated to undertake light-handed regulation, provide extension services and avail production and marketing information to ASM.
